KARACHI (MNN); The Sindh Counter Terrorism Department on Friday arrested five suspected members of the banned Baloch Republican Guard (BRG), thwarting an alleged plan to attack railway tracks in Karachi.
According to an official statement, the arrests were made during a joint intelligence-based operation conducted with Pakistan Rangers and a federal intelligence agency. Authorities said the operation successfully disrupted a planned act of sabotage targeting the railway network.
The CTD revealed that the group had previously been involved in at least six low-intensity blasts in Jacobabad and Shikarpur, which caused partial damage to railway tracks and a train carriage. The outfit had also claimed responsibility for these attacks on social media platforms.
During the operation, officials recovered explosives, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), weapons, and ammunition from the suspects. Interrogations indicated the group’s involvement in multiple incidents, including a train bombing in Jacobabad on June 6, 2025, an explosion near a railway station in Shikarpur on July 28, 2025, an attack on the Jaffar Express on October 7, 2025, and another blast near railway tracks earlier this year.
At least seven people were injured in the October 7 attack on the Jaffar Express.
Investigators further disclosed that the suspects received training in Lehri, Balochistan, and transported explosives with assistance from family members to evade law enforcement detection. A special team has now been formed to track down facilitators and accomplices.
Speaking at a press conference, DIG CTD Azfar Mahesar described the arrests as a significant blow to the group’s network. He also alleged that the militants were receiving financial support from India, calling it evidence of an external terror nexus.
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar praised the CTD’s efforts and vowed strict punishment for those involved.
Earlier in January, security agencies had foiled another major دہشت گردی منصوبہ in Karachi, seizing around 2,000 kilograms of explosives from a truck rigged with detonators, preventing a potentially catastrophic incident.
