Web Desk (MNN); Nvidia, Amazon and Microsoft are reportedly holding discussions to invest as much as $60 billion in OpenAI, according to a report by The Information.
The report said Nvidia, which already counts as an investor and supplies chips used to power OpenAI’s artificial intelligence models, is in talks to invest up to $30 billion. Microsoft, a long-time partner of OpenAI, is considering an investment of less than $10 billion.
Amazon, which would be a new investor, is said to be in discussions to commit a significantly larger amount, potentially exceeding $20 billion. According to the report, OpenAI is close to receiving term sheets, indicating firm investment commitments from these companies.
Amazon and Microsoft declined to comment on the matter, while Nvidia and OpenAI did not immediately respond to media queries. Reuters said it could not independently verify the report.
The Information noted that Amazon’s potential investment could be linked to separate negotiations, including an expansion of OpenAI’s cloud server rental arrangement with Amazon and a possible commercial deal allowing OpenAI to sell products such as enterprise ChatGPT subscriptions through Amazon.
The development follows reports earlier this week suggesting that Japan’s SoftBank Group is also in talks to invest up to an additional $30 billion in OpenAI.
OpenAI is currently facing rising costs associated with training and operating its AI models, amid intensifying competition from rivals such as Alphabet’s Google.
