GILGIT-BALTISTAN (MNN); The Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan has announced that general elections for the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly will be held on June 7, following a four-month delay due to severe weather conditions. The polls were originally scheduled for January 24, 2026, but were postponed indefinitely shortly after the initial announcement.
Chief Election Commissioner Raja Shahbaz Khan confirmed the new date, adding that the schedule for local government elections will be issued later and conducted after the general polls.
Meanwhile, a total of 664 candidates have submitted nomination papers across 24 constituencies of the GB Assembly, reflecting strong political engagement. The highest number of candidates was recorded in GB-2 Gilgit (58) and GB-14 Astore (57), followed by GB-20 Ghizer (42). Scrutiny of nomination papers is currently underway as per the schedule, after which the final list of eligible candidates will be displayed.
The Election Commission has directed all concerned officials to strictly ensure a transparent and fair electoral process. Officials noted that the large number of candidates indicates growing political activity and public interest in the upcoming elections.
