BANNU; At least 14 security personnel were injured in a bomb attack in the Daraban tehsil of Dera Ismail Khan on Tuesday, officials confirmed.
According to security sources, the blast was caused by a remotely controlled improvised explosive device (IED) that targeted a security forces convoy. The explosion severely damaged one of the vehicles. The injured were shifted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) D.I. Khan, where three personnel are said to be in critical condition.
The attack occurred amid an ongoing operation against terrorists holed up inside Cadet College Wana in South Waziristan, where the army is conducting a clearance operation to neutralise the remaining militants.
Following the explosion, a heavy contingent of police and security forces reached the site, cordoned off the area, and launched a search operation to track down the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police successfully foiled a terrorist attack on Ahmadzai Police Station in Bannu district during the early hours of Tuesday.
According to a police statement, “miscreants attempted to assault the police station using small and heavy weapons,” but the timely and effective response of the on-duty personnel thwarted the attack. Several terrorists were reportedly killed or injured, though their accomplices managed to take away the bodies.
KP Inspector General Zulfikar Hameed lauded the police team for their bravery, stating that the force remains “alert and ready to protect the public at all times.” He also announced a cash reward and commendation certificates for the personnel involved.
The incidents come as Pakistan continues to face a surge in militant violence, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, following the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan’s (TTP) decision to end its ceasefire with the government in November 2022.
