Sindh Government Establishes Power Authority to Provide Affordable Electricity to Karachi

KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced the formation of a dedicated power authority aimed at supplying affordable electricity to the residents of Karachi.

According to media reports, Sindh Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah stated that the new initiative will enable Karachiites to access electricity at significantly lower rates.

In a statement, Shah explained that the Sindh Electric Power Regulatory Authority (SEPRA) has been constitutionally approved by the Sindh Assembly. Key appointments have already been made, and the official notification is expected to be issued within this month.

He emphasized that the authority will now determine electricity tariffs independently, ensuring that rates for affordable electricity will be substantially lower than those charged by K-Electric.

Shah further clarified that electricity tariffs under SEPRA will not be linked to NEPRA rates. The Sindh government plans to generate and transmit power through its own system under the Sindh Transmission & Distribution Company (STDC), guaranteeing that the cost of electricity supplied will be considerably less than NEPRA-regulated tariffs.

Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, has long faced challenges with high electricity costs and frequent power shortages, with residents primarily reliant on K-Electric for supply.

The creation of SEPRA and the STDC initiative reflects the provincial government’s efforts to provide relief to consumers, increase competition in the power sector, and reduce the city’s dependence on private power suppliers.
