LAHORE; Further action against the suspended opposition members of the Punjab Assembly (PA) has been put on hold. According to media reports, the Speaker of the PA has instructed the assembly secretariat and members of the ruling party to refrain from taking any additional measures against these opposition lawmakers until meaningful talks between the government and the opposition yield results.
Sources revealed that the process of deducting fines from the salaries of 10 suspended opposition members—penalties imposed for charges of vandalism—has also been halted. Earlier, the Speaker had levied fines exceeding Rs 2 million on these suspended members over their alleged involvement in damaging assembly property.
Additionally, sources noted that the planned no-confidence motions aimed at removing nine more opposition members from their roles as committee chairmen have been stopped for now. However, it was confirmed that four opposition chairmen had already been removed from their positions prior to this decision.
This pause in punitive actions appears to be aimed at creating space for dialogue, signaling an effort to ease tensions between the treasury and opposition benches in the Punjab Assembly.
