RAWALPINDI (MNN); A dignified farewell ceremony took place at Joint Staff Headquarters on Wednesday in recognition of General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, who retired after serving the nation for four decades with distinction, professionalism and unwavering commitment.
The Inter-Services Public Relations stated that former Chairmen Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and senior military officials from the Army, Navy and Air Force attended the event, paying tribute to the outgoing CJCSC for his long-standing contribution to Pakistan’s security and defence.
Speaking on the occasion, General Mirza expressed gratitude to Allah for allowing him to serve Pakistan with loyalty and honour throughout 40 years of military service. He saluted the sacrifices of the armed forces and paid respect to the martyrs and their families, calling them the true symbol of national dignity.
He noted that current regional dynamics highlight the need for a capable national defence structure, describing defence preparedness as a vital foundation of Pakistan’s security. He reaffirmed that Pakistan’s defence remains strong and secure, adding that the nation’s troops are fully committed to safeguarding the homeland.
Upon arrival, he was presented with a guard of honour by a smartly dressed tri-services contingent. Senior serving and retired commanders extended best wishes and acknowledged his leadership and dedication.
The ISPR added that General Mirza’s 40-year professional legacy will remain a chapter of pride for both the armed forces and the nation.
Earlier this month, through amendments to Article 243 of the Constitution, significant reforms were introduced within the national security structure, including changes in laws governing the three armed services. The reforms also resulted in the abolition of the CJCSC role, a position historically responsible for inter-services coordination.
With the post formally discontinued from November 27, it brings an end to nearly half a century of joint military representation in high-level defence decision-making, particularly in times of conflict.
