Web Desk (MNN): Ukraine will acquire up to 100 French-made Rafale fighter jets over the next decade under an agreement signed on Monday, officials from both countries confirmed. The deal aims to bolster Kyiv’s defences amid ongoing Russian attacks.
The letter of intent, signed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron at France’s Villacoublay military airport, also includes air defence systems, munitions, and drones. Zelensky described the acquisition as “one of the greatest air defences in the world.”
Shares of Dassault, the manufacturer of Rafale jets, surged 8% following the announcement.
While the letter of intent is a political commitment rather than a purchase contract, the plan is to finance the deal through EU programs and potentially frozen Russian assets. The acquisition will involve new equipment, not transfers from French military stocks.
Macron emphasized the long-term strategy, saying the jets and other military support would help Ukraine regenerate its forces and defend against future incursions, even after a peace deal is reached. The deal also covers new-generation SAMP/T air-defence batteries and AASM Hammer air-to-surface munitions.
Although France has discussed providing additional military support for Ukraine, political and budgetary challenges may affect the pace of deliveries. France, along with the UK, is advocating for a coalition of about 30 countries ready to assist Ukraine or secure its borders after a peace agreement. Operating the advanced Rafale jets will require rigorous pilot training.
