FAISALABAD (MNN); In a major step toward urban development and environmental protection, construction has officially begun on the Eastern Faisalabad Wastewater Treatment Plant — a project nearly seven years in the making.
Punjab Minister for Housing, Urban Development and Public Health Engineering Bilal Yaseen and Denmark’s Ambassador Maja Mortensen jointly performed the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday. The plant is being funded by Impact Fund Denmark, previously known as IFU.
The advanced facility will treat 33 million gallons of wastewater daily, making it one of the most significant wastewater management projects in the region. Officials say the plant is designed to be self-sustaining and will help reduce groundwater pollution, improve public health, and enhance Faisalabad’s urban environment.
Ambassador Mortensen termed the project a long-term investment in clean water and healthier communities, appreciating the strong partnership between Pakistan and Denmark.
Minister Bilal Yaseen said the initiative would boost environmental protection and contribute to a greener and more resilient Faisalabad.
The ceremony also honoured the engineers, planners, partner organisations, and government officials whose efforts turned the long-standing vision into reality.
Construction is expected to pick up pace in the coming months, with authorities hopeful about its positive impact on the city’s sanitation infrastructure.
