KARACHI; The University of Karachi has officially cancelled the LLB degree and examination results of Justice Tariq Mehmood, citing the use of unfair means during his academic career.
According to an official notification issued by the Registrar, the decision was made in compliance with the recommendations of the Unfair Means Committee (UFM) and the approval of the University Syndicate, which met on August 31, 2024.
The committee had found Tariq Mehmood, son of Qazi Muhammad Akram, guilty of using unfair means in examinations. As a result, he was barred for three years from seeking admission to any university or college and from appearing in any university degree examination.
The notification further states that Justice Tariq Mehmood was never an enrolled student of Islamia Law College Karachi, as his admission records were found to be invalid. Consequently, his LLB enrollment number AIL-7124/87 and examination results have been withdrawn and cancelled.
Registrar Prof. Dr. Imran Ahmad Siddiqui, who signed the declaration, confirmed that the action was taken with the approval of the Vice Chancellor.
Copies of the notification have been forwarded to the Islamabad High Court, Sindh High Court, Government of Sindh, Higher Education Commission (HEC), Sindh Bar Council, Islamia Law College Karachi, and other relevant authorities.
Justice Tariq Mehmood had faced allegations of securing his law degree through unfair means. Following an inquiry, the UFM Committee recommended cancellation of his degree and disqualification from future academic pursuits.
The University Syndicate endorsed the recommendation in its 2024 meeting, leading to Thursday’s notification that formally stripped him of his LLB degree.
The decision, involving a sitting judge, has sparked attention in legal and academic circles, raising broader concerns about accountability and integrity in higher education.
