Hema Malini, born on October 16, 1948, began her acting journey in Tamil and Telugu films before making her Hindi film debut opposite Raj Kapoor in Sapno Ka Saudagar (1968).
Nicknamed the Dream Girl, she quickly rose to stardom with hits like Johny Mera Naam (1970), Andaz (1971), and Lal Patthar (1971). Her double role in Seeta Aur Geeta (1972) won her the Filmfare Best Actress Award, showcasing her exceptional talent.
Her portrayal of Basanti in Sholay (1975) remains one of Indian cinema’s most memorable performances. The 1970s and 80s saw her dominate the screen in films like Sanyasi, Dharmatma, Pratigya, and Trishul.
She later directed films such as Dil Aashna Hai (1992) and ventured into television. Even in later years, she impressed audiences with Baghban (2003), earning critical acclaim and numerous awards, including the Padma Shri.
Hema’s personal life drew equal attention. She met Dharmendra while filming Tum Haseen Main Jawan (1970). Despite him being married to Prakash Kaur, the couple maintained a relationship for years before marrying in 1980. Unable to marry under the Hindu Marriage Act, Dharmendra converted to Islam, and they wed in both Islamic and Iyengar ceremonies. The couple has two daughters, Esha and Ahana.
Their marriage was unconventional—often living separately—but endured through mutual respect and affection. Hema has said she never felt like an intruder in Dharmendra’s first family, and relations remained cordial.
