Web Desk; Iran has officially terminated its agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), signed in September, following the reinstatement of United Nations sanctions by Western powers, Iranian state media reported on Monday.
The announcement was made by Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, just days after the UN’s nuclear watchdog had resumed inspections of Iranian nuclear facilities under the now-cancelled accord.
According to the report, the move came nearly three weeks after Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi had warned that Tehran would scrap the deal if the West decided to reimpose UN sanctions.
Those sanctions were reinstated last month, prompting Iran to follow through on its warning.
“The agreement has been cancelled,” Larijani confirmed during a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart in Tehran. “Of course, if the agency has a new proposal, we will review it in the secretariat,” he added.
The cancellation marks another setback for the IAEA, which has been working to restore cooperation with Tehran since June, when Israel and the United States carried out strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
The development is expected to heighten tensions between Iran and Western powers at a time when diplomatic efforts to revive nuclear oversight have already been under strain.
