LONDON; Former Test umpire Harold “Dickie” Bird, one of cricket’s most respected and beloved figures, has died at the age of 92, Yorkshire County Cricket Club announced on Tuesday.
In a statement, Yorkshire described Bird as “one of cricket’s most beloved figures” who passed away peacefully at home.
Bird officiated in 66 Test matches and 69 one-day internationals, including three World Cup finals, earning worldwide admiration for his integrity, humour, and distinctive style.
“Dickie Bird enjoyed an illustrious career as an international umpire, writing his name into history as the most famous and popular official in the game,” the Yorkshire statement said.
Before becoming an umpire, Bird played for Yorkshire and Leicestershire, but it was his role as an international official that made him a household name.
In 2014, Bird was appointed president of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, a position he held with pride and distinction. The club noted that he would always remain synonymous with Yorkshire cricket and be remembered as one of the game’s most loyal supporters.
