PESHAWAR; At least one person was killed on Saturday in a bomb explosion during a cricket match in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur district, police said.
District Police Officer (DPO) Waqas Rafique confirmed that the blast took place at Kausar Cricket Ground in Khar tehsil, adding that it was triggered through an improvised explosive device (IED). “It seems to have been a targeted attack,” he stated.
The incident comes a week after terrorists attacked a police station in Bajaur’s Laghari area of Lowi Mamund tehsil using a quadcopter, injuring two people, including a police constable. The attack also damaged a vehicle parked inside the premises.
According to police sources, Constable Mohammad Habib and a civilian, Najeeb Khan, were shifted to the district headquarters hospital in Khar for medical treatment. Officials said the police station was targeted twice, but the second quadcopter attack failed to hit its mark.
Although no group has so far claimed responsibility for the latest explosion or the earlier assault, officials suspect militant involvement, pointing to Operation Sarbakaf — a counterterrorism offensive launched by security forces in the region two weeks ago.
