ATC convicts 75 PTI leaders, acquits 34 in May 9 Rana Sanaullah house attack case

FAISALABAD; : An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Faisalabad has sentenced 75 leaders and workers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) while acquitting 34 others in connection with the May 9, 2023 violence, including the attack on the residence of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah.

The judgment was announced by ATC Judge Javed Iqbal Sheikh in the case registered at Samanabad Police Station, Faisalabad. PTI’s counsel Malik Khalid Shafiq confirmed the verdict.

According to the decision, 59 individuals were awarded 10 years imprisonment each while 16 others were sentenced to three years in jail. The convicted lawmakers face disqualification under Article 63(1)(g) of the Constitution.

The case stems from the riots that erupted across Pakistan on May 9, 2023, following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan. In Faisalabad, a mob attacked the residence of then-PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah. Across the country, protesters targeted military installations and government properties, leading to widespread arrests and prosecutions.

    The judgment marks one of the most significant legal blows to PTI since the May 9 events, with several of its senior leaders now facing long prison sentences and likely disqualification from holding public office.
