NEPRA announces Rs1.89 per unit tariff cut for August to October, fuel cost reduced by Rs0.78

ISLAMABAD; The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has notified a uniform reduction of Rs1.89 per unit in electricity tariffs for the period of August to October 2025, providing temporary relief to consumers, including those under K-Electric.

A notification issued on August 7 confirmed that the quarterly adjustment of negative Rs1.8881 per kilowatt hour (kWh) would apply to all consumers of ex-Wapda distribution companies (Discos) and K-Electric, except for lifeline and prepaid customers.

The relief will be reflected in electricity bills for August, September, and October 2025. In a separate notification issued the same day, NEPRA also approved a negative fuel cost adjustment (FCA) of Rs0.78 per unit for the month of June 2025.

This will apply to the electricity bills of August for consumers of all Discos, except K-Electric. The FCA will not apply to lifeline consumers, protected consumers, Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS), or prepaid electricity users.

NEPRA directed Discos to show this FCA separately on bills based on June’s electricity consumption. If August bills were issued before this notification, the adjustment can be applied in the following month.

NEPRA stressed that all Discos must comply with existing court orders while implementing these changes. Additionally, NEPRA responded to a request from the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA-G) regarding the June FCA.

The agency reported that the actual pool fuel cost was Rs7.68 per unit, compared to the reference fuel cost of Rs8.3341 per unit — a difference of Rs0.65 per unit.

These announcements came following a NEPRA hearing on complaints of overbilling and demands for lower tariffs. During the hearing, Discos had requested a negative quarterly adjustment of Rs1.80 per unit, aimed at refunding around Rs53.4 billion to consumers due to reduced capacity payments in the fourth quarter (April to June) of fiscal year 2025.

The combined impact of these reductions is expected to ease the burden of high electricity costs on consumers nationwide.
