ISLAMABAD (MNN); Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to maintain close cooperation with Iran in a letter addressed to the country’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, the Prime Minister’s Office said on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the prime minister congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei on assuming the position of supreme leader following the appointment by Iran’s Assembly of Experts.
Mojtaba Khamenei was named the new supreme leader a day earlier after his father, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, was assassinated in coordinated strikes carried out by the United States and Israel in Iran a few days ago.
In his message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended his congratulations and expressed hope that the new leader would guide Iran toward peace, stability and prosperity.
He also conveyed condolences over the martyrdom of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, describing him as the revered supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The prime minister noted that the martyrdom of the late Iranian leader had deeply saddened the people of Pakistan, who stand in solidarity with the leadership and citizens of Iran during this difficult time.
Shehbaz Sharif expressed confidence that Mojtaba Khamenei would lead Iran toward peace, dignity, stability and progress in the years ahead.
In his letter, the prime minister highlighted the longstanding relationship between Pakistan and Iran, stating that the ties between the two countries are rooted in shared faith, history, culture and language.
He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to continue working closely with Iran to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in all areas of mutual interest for the benefit of the two brotherly nations.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also prayed for the health, well-being and success of Mojtaba Khamenei and expressed his wishes for peace, stability and prosperity for the people of Iran.
In a separate post on social media platform X, the prime minister congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei on assuming the responsibilities of the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari also extended his congratulations to Mojtaba Khamenei in a message posted on X, expressing good wishes and hoping for improved regional stability and conditions.
