Web Desk (MNN); The global fashion industry is mourning the loss of legendary Italian fashion designer Valentino Garavani, who passed away on Monday at the age of 93, his foundation confirmed.
Widely known simply as Valentino, the iconic designer retired from the fashion world in 2008 after an illustrious career that reshaped haute couture. He founded the House of Valentino in 1960 and went on to define the glamour of Rome’s elite jet-set lifestyle, while also introducing Italian couture to the prestigious Paris fashion scene.
As the creator of the luxury brand bearing his name, Valentino reached the pinnacle of high fashion, built a worldwide business empire and gifted the fashion world with the signature shade famously known as “Valentino Red,” which became a symbol of elegance and sophistication.
In a statement shared on Instagram, the Valentino Foundation said that Valentino Garavani passed away at his residence in Rome, surrounded by family and loved ones.
According to the foundation, the lying in state will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, while the funeral will take place in Rome on Friday at 11:00am local time.
Valentino is remembered as one of the last great designers of a golden era of fashion, standing alongside Giorgio Armani and Karl Lagerfeld, before the industry evolved into a highly commercial global enterprise driven by marketing and corporate management as much as creative vision.
