Urumqi: The 7th China Xinjiang International Dance Festival is set to kick off on July 20 in Urumqi, the capital of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and will run through August 5, organizers announced at a press conference on Wednesday.
Co-hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the State Council Information Office, and the Xinjiang regional government, this year’s festival will feature 52 performances by 24 art groups from around the world.
The festival, which has grown in prominence since its inception in 2008, will take place at the main venue in Urumqi and six other locations across Xinjiang, including Ili, Hotan, Aksu, Karamay, Hami, and Alaer. Renowned groups from eight countries—such as Kazakhstan, Cambodia, the United States, and Italy—will perform a wide variety of dance genres, including ethnic operas, ballet, musicals, modern dance, and dance dramas.
Yu Jie, Deputy Director of Xinjiang’s Culture and Tourism Department, highlighted that the event offers a unique opportunity for cultural exchange, aligning with China’s Belt and Road Initiative. The festival has previously attracted over 138 art groups from more than 70 countries, showcasing over 200 performances.
This year’s event is particularly significant as it coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. To celebrate, special offers and discounts will be available for dining, accommodations, transportation, shopping, and entertainment. Additionally, artists will stage mini-performances at various local tourist sites and landmarks, enriching the cultural experience for visitors.
