JHELUM: Police in Punjab’s Jhelum district arrested two men on Thursday for allegedly mutilating a cow that had strayed into their farmland in the village of Mohaal.
According to Jhelum District Police Officer (DPO) Tariq Aziz Sindhu, a first information report (FIR) has been registered against the suspects under Section 429 of the Pakistan Penal Code (mischief by killing or maiming cattle or other valuable animals).
The complainant, who owns the cow, alleged that the two landowners attacked the animal with an axe, striking its front leg and leaving it severely injured before fleeing the scene while issuing threats.
DPO Sindhu confirmed both suspects were arrested — one of them from a nearby forested area — and assured that the case would be pursued thoroughly. “Cruelty against animals is intolerable,” he said, adding that after proper investigation, the culprits would be presented before a court of law.
The FIR stated that the injured cow was shifted to a veterinary hospital in Chak Aka for treatment.
Animal cruelty cases have been increasingly reported across Pakistan. Earlier this week, a landlord and his son in Bahawalnagar’s Minchinabad area were charged for brutally torturing a buffalo after it accidentally entered their home. They allegedly attacked it with axes, attempting to sever its legs, and abandoned it in critical condition. Police later arrested the main suspect after a video of the incident went viral.
Similarly, in September, a camel in Sukkur was found severely injured after being allegedly attacked by a landowner for entering his field. The animal’s leg was broken and it was dragged by a tractor, but later rescued and handed over to an animal shelter in Karachi.
In another case last year, six men in Sanghar were arrested after cutting off a camel’s leg in the village of Mund Jamrao for grazing in a field. The incident drew nationwide outrage, and in July this year, the camel managed to stand again with the help of a prosthetic limb.
