Silent catastrophe: Gaza doctors warn of mass starvation for infants

Gaza Strip: Doctors in the Gaza Strip are issuing dire warnings of a “silent catastrophe” that threatens the lives of thousands of babies and infants. A heartbreaking crisis is unfolding as critical supplies of infant formula milk have run perilously low, leaving vulnerable newborns without the nourishment essential for their survival.

The ongoing conflict and severe blockade on Gaza have drastically disrupted the humanitarian aid pipeline, exacerbating the already desperate situation. International health organizations report that hospitals and medical centers are overwhelmed and operating at breaking point, with extremely limited resources.

With supply lines severely restricted by the blockade and extensive destruction of key infrastructure, families are desperately struggling to find enough formula to feed their children. This scarcity is compounded by the staggering number of displaced families, many of whom have lost their homes and access to even the most basic necessities.

The Gaza Health Ministry reports that 580 premature babies are at imminent risk of death from starvation. Two infants have already died in Gaza due to severe malnutrition and lack of infant formula, with local medical authorities stating that the total number of deaths attributed to shortages of food and medicine has now reached 244, with most victims being children and the elderly.

Hospitals like Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis have warned of completely depleted medical-grade formula stocks, with some deliveries only providing enough for a few weeks’ supply. Fortified formula for newborns is also out of stock at Al-Rantisi Hospital in Gaza City. Many mothers, suffering from severe malnutrition themselves, are unable to breastfeed, further intensifying the crisis.

The United Nations has warned that the entire territory has completely run out of infant formula, emphasizing the critical threat to hundreds of babies. This unfolding crisis highlights the catastrophic impact of the prolonged conflict and blockade on Gaza’s most vulnerable population.
