NEWS DESK (MNN); Suspected militants carried out a late-night grenade and gun attack on a police post near Atta Bazaar in the Khwezai area of Mohmand district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, officials said on Monday.
According to police sources, unidentified assailants threw a hand grenade and opened fire on the Muharrar police post late Sunday night. Police personnel deployed at the checkpoint immediately returned fire.
After a brief exchange of gunfire, the attackers fled the scene under the cover of darkness. Authorities confirmed that no casualties or damage to property occurred during the incident.
Following the attack, security across the district has been tightened and all police posts have been placed on high alert as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, police officials also reported that mortar shells were fired from across the border in Afghanistan into Pakistan’s Mohmand district.
Sources said Baizai police station received information at around 3:10am on Monday that two mortar shells had been launched from the Afghan side of the border.
The shells reportedly landed some distance away from a Frontier Corps post and the Atam Kalay police checkpost. Officials confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.
In a related development, local sources reported a heavy exchange of fire between Pakistani and Afghan forces in the border areas near Ghulam Khan in North Waziristan. The firing reportedly began early in the morning and continued until the afternoon.
Due to the ongoing clashes and growing fears among residents, people from nearby villages have started moving to safer areas. The security situation in the border region remains tense.
Cross-border firing incidents have occurred periodically along various sections of the Pak-Afghan border, often affecting civilians living in adjacent areas.
The Ghulam Khan border crossing in North Waziristan, an important route for trade and travel between Pakistan and Afghanistan, remains completely closed due to the prevailing security conditions.
Meanwhile, security sources said Pakistan’s armed forces had carried out a successful operation targeting militant infrastructure across the border.
According to reports broadcast by Radio Pakistan, an ammunition depot at Shaheen Base in Afghanistan’s Paktika province was completely destroyed during the operation.
The report said hideouts and military installations used by Afghan Taliban and the group referred to as Fitna al Khawarij were targeted along the Pak-Afghan border.
Security sources further stated that Pakistan Army also struck an Afghan Taliban post located near Shawal in South Waziristan. The installation was reportedly destroyed using explosives, forcing militants stationed there to flee.
Officials said these retaliatory actions are part of Operation Ghazab lil-Haq, which Pakistan launched on February 26 in response to what it described as unprovoked cross-border firing by Afghan Taliban fighters.
According to the information minister, the ongoing operation has so far resulted in the deaths of 583 Afghan Taliban personnel while 795 others have been injured.
Authorities also claim that Pakistan’s armed forces have destroyed 242 Afghan Taliban checkposts since the launch of the operation.
In response to the escalating situation, Afghanistan’s Taliban administration has reportedly expressed willingness to engage in negotiations following Pakistan’s air strikes.
