ISLAMABAD; The federal government has taken a significant step toward reviving sports in Pakistan by approving major financial support for the national hockey team, ensuring its participation in international competitions once again.
According to official sources, Pakistan has been confirmed to take part in Season 7 of the FIH Pro League, a globally recognized event that also plays a key role in qualification for the Olympics and the Hockey World Cup. The decision follows recommendations from the Pakistan Sports Board, which stressed the urgent need to restore Pakistan’s place in world hockey after years of decline.
To make this possible, the government has sanctioned Rs 250 million for the Pakistan Hockey Federation. The funds will be used for international travel, logistics, training camps, and related arrangements. The PHF has been directed
to submit a comprehensive plan within three days, outlining the utilization of the funds, including details of training, management, and travel.
In addition, the government has allocated Rs 150 million for the first-ever National Youth Games in Islamabad. Officials believe that alongside reviving hockey, promoting grassroots sports among the youth will help in rebuilding Pakistan’s sporting culture.
Experts are calling this a turning point for Pakistan hockey, a sport that once brought the country three Olympic gold medals and four World Cup titles but has struggled in recent decades due to financial crises and poor management.
