Four-Day Holiday Likely as Independence Day, Chehlum May Coincide

ISLAMABAD; Independence Day festivities have officially commenced across Pakistan, with nationwide events and ceremonies unfolding under this year’s theme, “Marka-e-Haq.”

The theme commemorates the recent period of military engagement with India — beginning with the April 22 Pahalgam attack and concluding with Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos on May 10.

This year’s Independence Day on August 14 may coincide with a rare extended break, as it falls adjacent to the expected date of Chehlum — the 40th day of mourning after the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) — which is anticipated on Thursday, August 15.

While August 14 is officially designated as a public holiday nationwide, Chehlum is not a fixed federal holiday. However, provincial governments and local administrations can choose to declare a public holiday on that day.

In 2024, for instance, the Sindh government closed all public and private schools across the province for Chehlum.

If similar provincial-level holidays are announced this year, citizens may benefit from a four-day break — with Friday, August 16, and Saturday, August 17, effectively extending the holiday period.

As of now, official confirmations regarding Chehlum-related holidays from provincial authorities are still pending.
