Islamabad: Federal Minister for Energy, Sardar Owais Ahmad Khan Leghari, today affirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to a data-driven, reform-oriented energy transition, outlining ambitious goals to shift towards cleaner and smarter energy solutions. Speaking at a virtual address to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the Minister highlighted the government’s strategic initiatives, including the shutting down of inefficient power plants to create fiscal space for new, sustainable projects.

Minister Leghari reaffirmed Pakistan’s critical target of generating 60% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. He emphasized the accelerated pace of installing renewable energy projects across the country as a key part of this strategy.

“The government is advancing a data-driven, reform-oriented energy transition,” Minister Leghari stated. “We have created significant fiscal space that is now being redirected toward cleaner and smarter energy solutions by shutting down inefficient power plants.”

The Energy Minister also shed light on ongoing efforts to modernize Pakistan’s national power grid and enhance transparency within the energy sector, supported by various energy companies. He noted that the deployment of smart meters and transformer monitoring systems is actively contributing to reducing energy losses.

Furthermore, initiatives aimed at fostering local innovation and technology transfer in the energy domain are well underway, underscoring a commitment to self-reliance and technological advancement.

Minister Leghari underscored Pakistan’s unique geographical position, describing it as a “natural energy bridge” connecting Central Asia, South Asia, and the Gulf regions. He reiterated the government’s dedication to enhancing regional energy connectivity and cooperation, recognizing the mutual benefits of such collaborations.

The address at the SCO platform reflects Pakistan’s increasing engagement in regional energy dialogues and its determined pursuit of a cleaner, more resilient energy landscape. These efforts align with global sustainability goals and aim to secure a stable and environmentally responsible energy future for the nation and the region.
