Web Desk; Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) senior leader and former Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, Agha Siraj Durrani, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 72, according to a statement issued by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

Expressing deep sorrow, Murad Ali Shah described Durrani as “a sincere, loyal, and principled leader” who played a vital role in strengthening the Sindh Assembly and promoting democracy in the province. He said that Durrani had made public service the core of his political career, adding that his contributions would always be remembered.

President Asif Ali Zardari also expressed profound grief and paid tribute to Durrani’s political and public services, highlighting his role in consolidating democracy and serving the people of Sindh.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his message, acknowledged Durrani’s significant services as Sindh Assembly Speaker and said his political contributions and efforts for public welfare would always be remembered.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab described him as “an honourable man who stood by the PPP and its leadership during difficult times.”

National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq called Durrani “a wise and astute politician,” stating that the void created by his demise would not be filled for a long time.

Born in 1953, Durrani completed his early education at St. Patrick’s School, Karachi, and later obtained degrees in Commerce and Law. He entered politics alongside his brother during the 1985 non-party elections. He was arrested in 1990 during Nawaz Sharif’s first government on charges of embezzlement.

Durrani served as Speaker of the Sindh Assembly for two consecutive terms between 2013–2018 and 2018–2023. His death marks the end of an era in Sindh’s political landscape.
