IHC judge restrained in alleged fake degree case seeks relief from apex court

Web Desk; Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has decided to contest the division bench’s ruling that barred him from performing judicial duties. According to media reports, the senior judge plans to challenge the order before the Supreme Court of Pakistan, with an appeal to be filed once the written order is officially received.

The development follows the latest proceedings in the alleged fake degree case, which has cast a shadow over Justice Jahangiri’s tenure. A two-member division bench of the IHC recently restrained him from hearing cases or engaging in judicial work until the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) reaches a final verdict on the matter. The suspension has been viewed as a major setback for the judge, who has served on the IHC bench in several significant cases.

Earlier, questions were raised over the authenticity of Justice Jahangiri’s academic qualifications. The allegations prompted a reference before the SJC, the constitutional body responsible for examining complaints against superior court judges. As the matter gained traction, the IHC bench intervened, directing that the judge remain off the roster until the SJC delivers its findings.

Legal analysts believe Justice Jahangiri’s decision to approach the Supreme Court reflects his determination to clear his name and challenge what he considers an unfair restraint. The upcoming appeal is expected to bring further judicial scrutiny to the ongoing controversy, with the Supreme Court now set to play a decisive role in determining his future within the judiciary.
