Islamabad: Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, chaired a high-level meeting in Islamabad to review and expedite efforts aimed at increasing cotton yield across the country. The meeting gathered senior officials from the Ministry, representatives of provincial agriculture departments, research experts, and stakeholders from major cotton-growing regions.

In his opening remarks, the Minister described cotton as a vital crop for Pakistan’s agriculture sector and the backbone of the textile industry. He voiced concern over the decline in cotton productivity in recent years and stressed the need for a coordinated and targeted strategy to address the structural challenges affecting the crop. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reviving cotton production through farmer-focused initiatives, research-based solutions, and improved service delivery in agriculture.

He highlighted that boosting cotton yields is crucial not only for sustaining the textile value chain but also for improving farmers’ livelihoods and increasing rural incomes. He emphasized the timely availability of certified seeds and pesticides, better pest management practices, the adoption of climate-resilient farming techniques, and enhanced farmer awareness through strengthened extension services. The Minister also directed the concerned departments to accelerate policy measures and technological innovations that could help close the yield gap and secure higher returns for cotton growers.

Participants in the meeting reviewed various proposals to improve crop management and field practices. They exchanged views on the current state of cotton cultivation and discussed practical steps to overcome production constraints. It was decided that a comprehensive action plan would be developed in close collaboration with the provinces to ensure effective implementation before the next sowing season.

In his concluding remarks, Rana Tanveer Hussain underscored that cotton remains a strategic crop for Pakistan and requires urgent attention at all levels of government. He stressed the importance of institutional collaboration, efficient use of resources, and stronger market linkages to ensure the sector’s long-term sustainability and profitability. He assured that the Ministry would continue to play an active role in addressing farmers’ challenges and supporting the growth of the cotton economy.
