DAVOS: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Asim Munir on Thursday held a series of informal discussions with global leaders on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the two leaders met Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan. PM Shehbaz and Field Marshal Munir also attended an address by US President Donald Trump to world leaders at the forum on Wednesday.
The prime minister is in Davos on a three-day visit from January 20 to 22, heading a high-level Pakistani delegation.
On Wednesday, PM Shehbaz spoke at a breakfast event hosted at the Pakistan Pavilion during the WEF, where he emphasised that export-driven growth remains Pakistan’s sole viable path forward.
During his address, he said Pakistan “is moving forward with a sense of achievement and a sense of purpose”, highlighting a decline in inflation and a cut in the policy interest rate.
The prime minister also held talks with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. As per the PMO, he updated her on improvements in Pakistan’s macroeconomic indicators, ongoing stabilisation measures, and advancements in institutional reforms.
He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to fiscal discipline, enhanced revenue collection, and sustainable development, the statement added.
In addition, PM Shehbaz met Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa on the margins of the WEF.
The prime minister arrived in Davos on Tuesday and said in a post on X that his visit aimed to strengthen Pakistan’s engagement at the WEF with international trade and investment partners.
