ISLAMABAD (MNN); Romania celebrated its National Day of December 1, marking the historic Great Union of 1918 and reaffirming its commitment to freedom, security, and prosperity. During the commemorative address, Romanian officials reflected on 61 years of diplomatic relations with Pakistan, noting six decades of cooperation and friendship.
The Romanian Embassy highlighted recent progress in bilateral ties, including the opening of the Romanian Honorary Consulate in Peshawar and upcoming consulates in Karachi and Lahore.
The ambassador said he travelled across several major cities, including Karachi, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi and Peshawar, to enhance economic engagement and build business linkages.
A major milestone this year was the first-ever Romania–Pakistan IT Forum, which connected more than 100 companies from both sides and set the groundwork for new partnerships in technology and digital development. Defence cooperation has also strengthened, with high-level exchanges deepening military coordination.
The relationship has expanded beyond official channels into culture, media and education. Romania recently held the first edition of Romanian Cultural Days in Pakistan, featuring film screenings, art exhibitions and music performances in Islamabad and Karachi.
Academic ties have grown as well, with partnerships between Romanian universities and institutions like NUST, GIFT and NUTECH. The first Romanian language lectorate has also been inaugurated at NUML.
Speaking on global and regional security, Romania reiterated its firm stance on defending democracy, sovereignty and the rule of law.
The address referenced increased tensions along the region due to the Ukraine conflict, with Romania facing security alerts after drone strikes near the Danube River. The country stressed its continued support for Ukraine and collaboration with NATO allies to strengthen the Eastern Flank.
Romania also reaffirmed support for Moldova’s European Union aspirations while acknowledging ongoing regional challenges. Officials said Romania remains committed to working with international partners and maintaining strong ties through EU and NATO diplomacy.
As the celebrations concluded, the embassy expressed optimism for continued progress between Pakistan and Romania, calling the longstanding relationship a foundation for greater cooperation in trade, culture, education and security in the future.
