ISLAMABAD (MNN); Islamabad witnessed severe traffic congestion on Sunday as the ongoing tri-nation cricket series combined with extensive VVIP movement brought major arteries of the capital to a standstill. The traffic police struggled to manage the situation but failed to prevent hours-long gridlock across the city.
Unlike previous years, when international cricket teams stayed in hotels located within the secure Red Zone, causing minimal disruption, this time the teams were accommodated in the middle of the city.
The decision resulted in widespread blockages as routes were repeatedly sealed for team movement, causing immense difficulties for daily commuters.
Residents reported being stuck in traffic for hours as roads leading to key commercial and residential areas, including F-7, Blue Area, F-8 and Faizabad, remained jam-packed throughout the day.
Public frustration intensified as people missed work commitments, school schedules, and important appointments due to the prolonged delays.
Islamabad, already known for its recurring traffic problems, has been facing worsening congestion in recent months. Blocked routes, inconsistent traffic signals, and inadequate lane management have added to the burden.
The situation has now escalated further due to the ongoing cricket series and VVIP protocol, overwhelming the city’s traffic control system.
Commuters continued to complain about a lack of timely traffic updates and poor diversion planning. Many criticized authorities for failing to anticipate the surge in congestion despite clear knowledge of team schedules and movements.
Some called for a return to the previous practice of hosting teams in the Red Zone, which historically minimized disruption while ensuring security.

As frustration grew, social media platforms were flooded with videos and posts showing long queues of vehicles stuck for miles. Motorists described the day as one of the worst in recent memory, with some reporting over two hours spent on routes that normally take 15–20 minutes.
The chaotic situation has once again highlighted the need for improved traffic management strategies in Islamabad. Citizens have urged the government to coordinate better between law-enforcement agencies, sports authorities, and city traffic departments to prevent avoidable disruptions in the future.
