PESHAWAR; The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announced on Tuesday that it will convene a peace jirga in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on November 12 to discuss the deteriorating law and order situation in the province.
The decision was made during a high-level consultative meeting chaired jointly by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and PTI’s provincial president Junaid Akbar.
The meeting was attended by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati, provincial secretary general Ali Asghar Khan, provincial ministers Meena Khan Afridi and Aftab Alam Khan, PTI spokesperson Shafi Jan, MNAs Atif Khan, Dr Amjad Khan, Arbab Sher Ali, and PTI Peshawar President Irfan Saleem.
According to an official statement, the meeting reviewed the province’s overall political and security situation and finalized preparations for the upcoming peace jirga.
It was decided that leaders of all political parties, along with civil society representatives, bar association members, former governors, and former chief ministers, will be invited to ensure a united front for peace and stability in the province.
Speaking to the media, Atif Khan said that the security situation in KP had reached an alarming level and could not be addressed by one party alone. He termed the event a “national peace jirga”, where leaders from around 20 political parties would participate to discuss strategies for restoring law and order.
He added that Chief Minister Afridi had already met Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai and Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas to invite them to the gathering.
During their meeting, national and provincial matters — including the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment and its possible impact on provincial autonomy — were discussed. CM Afridi stressed that the merged districts’ share in the NFC award had yet to be provided and warned that tampering with the NFC formula could harm national unity.
Achakzai assured the chief minister of his full support for protecting KP’s constitutional and financial rights.
