BEIJING; China on Thursday welcomed the decision by Pakistan and Afghanistan to implement a temporary ceasefire after several days of intense cross-border clashes, urging both sides to exercise restraint and resolve their differences through dialogue to ensure lasting peace.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said at a regular press briefing that Beijing supports both countries in addressing their issues through “constructive dialogue and consultation.”

He emphasized that stable relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan are essential for the peace and prosperity of the entire region.

“This serves the common interests of both sides and is conducive to regional peace and stability,” Lin stated.

He added that China is ready to play a constructive role in promoting continued improvement in ties between the two neighbouring countries.

Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed to a temporary 48-hour ceasefire on Wednesday, October 15, following a sharp escalation in hostilities involving both airstrikes and ground combat.

“Pakistan and Afghanistan are both friendly neighbours of China and inseparable neighbours to each other,” Lin said, calling on both countries to “remain calm and restrained, achieve a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire, and return to the path of political settlement.”
