ISLAMABAD; The Independent group, commonly known as the Asma Jahangir Group, secured a decisive victory in the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) elections for the third consecutive year on Thursday.
Haroonur Rashid was elected as the new president, while Zahid Aslam Awan won the secretary’s position.
According to unofficial results, Rashid defeated his rival Taufiq Asif of the Hamid Khan-led Professional Group by a clear margin. In Lahore, Rashid bagged 629 votes compared to Asif’s 431 votes — a nearly 200-vote lead that proved crucial for his overall victory.
The vote count from other polling stations showed Rashid and Asif securing 120 and 101 votes in Quetta, 135 and 115 in Multan, 55 and 15 in Sukkur, 27 and 23 in Swat, and 25 and 5 in Bannu, respectively.
Both presidential candidates belonged to Islamabad/Rawalpindi, as the top slot was reserved this year for the federal capital under the rotation policy.
For the secretary’s position, Zahid Awan received 595 votes, defeating Mian Irfan Akram who secured 442 votes at the Lahore Registry polling station.
Thirteen polling stations were set up nationwide, including Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur, Karachi, Quetta, Peshawar, and Hyderabad. Among them, the Lahore Registry served as the largest polling centre, with 20 polling booths and over 1,400 expected voters.
