ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided that Director General Inter-Services Intelligence (DG ISI), Lieutenant General Asim Malik, will continue to serve in his current position, Aaj TV reported on Monday, citing official sources.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the continuation of Lt Gen Malik’s services. He was appointed DG ISI in September 2024, replacing Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum. In April 2025, he was also given the additional charge of National Security Adviser (NSA) to ensure better coordination between security policy formulation and implementation.

Security officials told Aaj TV that the decision demonstrates the government’s confidence in Lt Gen Malik’s leadership during a period of complex regional and domestic security challenges.

Lt Gen Malik is considered one of the most capable and professionally distinguished officers in the Pakistan Army. Over his career, he has commanded an infantry division in Balochistan and an infantry brigade in South Waziristan — both key regions in Pakistan’s security landscape.

A Sword of Honour recipient from the Pakistan Military Academy, he is also a graduate of the US Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, and the Royal College of Defence Studies in the UK.

Lt Gen Malik has previously served as Chief Instructor at the National Defence University (NDU) and as an instructor at the Command and Staff College, Quetta. He is the son of Lt Gen (Retd) Ghulam Muhammad Malik, who held senior command positions in the 1990s.
