LAHORE; Top leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) held a high-level strategy meeting at Jati Umra on Saturday, where they agreed to a political ceasefire with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and to resolve outstanding issues through phased and mutual consultations.
The session was attended by former prime minister and party supremo Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The leadership discussed three major political and governance matters and decided to adopt a step-by-step approach to bridge differences with the PPP while halting aggressive rhetoric.
The decision comes after Maryam Nawaz’s remarks on flood relief triggered a backlash from PPP leaders, escalating tensions between the two allies. A separate reconciliatory meeting held earlier at Parliament House had already paved the way for dialogue between the two parties.
At Jati Umra, Maryam Nawaz explained the context of her earlier statements, while Prime Minister Shehbaz briefed senior party figures on his engagements with the PPP leadership. Nawaz Sharif was updated on the situation in Azad Kashmir and recent foreign contacts, including discussions involving former US President Donald Trump and Arab leaders.
Nawaz Sharif commended the government’s diplomatic efforts for peace in Palestine and stressed the importance of settling remaining disputes through consultation. He also emphasized addressing the legitimate concerns of Kashmiris and preventing any elements from destabilizing the region.
Party leaders said the ceasefire aims to create a stable political environment so both parties can focus on governance, national priorities, and relief work. Further meetings and consultations will be scheduled to ensure implementation of the agreed roadmap.
