ISLAMABAD; Electricity prices are expected to rise across Pakistan next month as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) reviews a petition filed by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA). The request seeks an increase of 19 paisa per unit under the fuel price adjustment mechanism.
According to official reports, distribution companies (DISCOs) received a total of 102.94 billion units of electricity in August. However, production costs rose significantly, with the average cost per unit reaching Rs7.50, compared to Rs7.31 in July.
The breakdown of generation costs shows wide variation among energy sources. Electricity from local coal cost Rs12.01 per unit, while imported coal rose to Rs14.07 per unit. Generation through furnace oil remained the highest among local sources at Rs33 per unit.
Gas-based electricity cost Rs13.43 per unit, while power from LNG stood at Rs21.73 per unit. Imported electricity from Iran was the most expensive at Rs41 per unit, while bagasse-based electricity cost Rs9.87 per unit.
Sources confirm that NEPRA’s decision on the CPPA’s request will be announced in the coming days. If approved, consumers nationwide will face an additional financial burden in their electricity bills starting next month.
