190 Million Pound Case: IHC to Hear Suspension Pleas of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi Today

ISLAMABAD; The Islamabad High Court (IHC) will take up today the petitions filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, seeking suspension of their sentences in the 190 million pound reference. The case is being heard as part of their appeals against the accountability court’s earlier conviction.

Earlier this year, an accountability court in Islamabad handed down prison terms and fines to former prime minister Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in the 190 million pound case. According to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), funds worth £190 million repatriated by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) to Pakistan were misused, allegedly through the Al-Qadir Trust, raising serious questions about financial impropriety. The case has since remained in the spotlight in both legal and political circles.

Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, through their counsel Barrister Salman Safdar, had submitted miscellaneous applications requesting an early hearing of their suspension pleas. The division bench of Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Muhammad Azam Khan will preside over the proceedings today.

It is noteworthy that the last hearing on the suspension pleas took place on June 26. Legal observers consider today’s hearing particularly significant, as a decision to prioritize or expedite the case could pave the way for potential relief and even release of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi.

The case holds not only major legal consequences for the former prime minister but also carries far-reaching political implications, especially at a time of heightened friction between the government and opposition forces.
