ISLAMABAD; Skywatchers across Pakistan will be treated to a spectacular astronomical event next weekend, as the country experiences a total lunar eclipse, commonly known as a “Blood Moon” , on the night of September 7 and into the early hours of September 8, 2025.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed that this will be the only total lunar eclipse visible from Pakistan this year. Globally, four eclipses are expected in 2025, including two solar and two lunar. However, only the September lunar eclipse will be visible from Pakistan.

The event will unfold in distinct stages:

  • 8:28pm (Sept 7): The moon enters Earth’s penumbra, causing a faint dimming.
  • 9:27pm: Partial eclipse begins as the darker shadow moves across the moon.
  • 10:31pm: Total eclipse starts, with the moon glowing in a reddish-orange hue, creating the dramatic “Blood Moon.”
  • 11:12pm–11:53pm: Peak of the eclipse, when the moon appears at its deepest red.
  • 12:57am (Sept 8): Partial eclipse ends as the shadow recedes.
  • 1:55am: The eclipse concludes with the end of the penumbral phase.

Astronomy enthusiasts are being encouraged to observe the phenomenon, which will be visible across the country without the need for telescopes or special equipment.
