ISLAMABAD; Internet services across Pakistan faced significant slowdowns on Saturday after submarine cable cuts were reported in Saudi waters near Jeddah.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) confirmed that a break had occurred in an undersea cable system close to Jeddah, partially disrupting connectivity.
The disruption affected bandwidth on two major submarine cable networks, SMW4 and IMEWE, which play a crucial role in linking Pakistan with global internet infrastructure. As a result, users in the country experienced reduced browsing speeds, particularly during peak usage hours.
The PTCL spokesperson assured that efforts were underway to mitigate the impact. International partners have been mobilised to repair the damaged sections on an urgent basis, while local technical teams are working to secure alternate routes and bandwidth to restore services as quickly as possible.
The statement also conveyed appreciation to customers for their patience, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the disruption.
