KARACHI; A fact-finding committee formed to probe the death of senior Dawn News reporter Khawar Hussain Bajwa has concluded that he died by suicide, according to its final report.
Bajwa was found dead last week in his car on Hyderabad Road, Sanghar, with a gunshot wound to the head.
Initially described as “mysterious,” the case was investigated by a three-member police committee led by Sindh Additional IGP (CTD) Azad Khan, Karachi West Zone Deputy IGP Irfan Baloch, and Sanghar SSP Abid Baloch.
The report stated that forensic evidence confirmed the fatal shot was fired from Bajwa’s licensed 9mm pistol, found in his right hand. CCTV footage showed his vehicle parked outside a Sanghar restaurant for two hours without anyone approaching it.
Postmortem findings, including soot, burn marks, and muzzle imprints, indicated a close-range, self-inflicted shot, ruling out homicide or accidental fire.
The committee determined the time of death between 9:58pm and 10:35pm. While some acquaintances suggested personal disputes may have been a factor, investigators said this aspect required further inquiry at a later stage.
Police noted that Bajwa had not informed family or friends in Sanghar about his arrival, nor did he attend a traditional ritual he had requested. His sister told police that he celebrated Eidul Azha with her this year after their parents moved to the US.
A request has been submitted to the Sindh Home Department for a medical board to ensure a transparent and impartial postmortem.
