Rana Sanaullah Files Senate Nomination Amid PML-N’s Strategic Push Ahead of Polls

ISLAMABAD; Adviser to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan has submitted his nomination papers for the upcoming Senate elections, setting off a new wave of political debate as the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) maneuvers to consolidate its position in the upper house.

Speaking to reporters after filing his papers, Rana Sanaullah said he was ready to accept any responsibility assigned to him by the party leadership. “Whatever responsibility the party gives me, I will fulfill it. Mian Nawaz Sharif’s trust is an honour for me,” he remarked.

Rana Sanaullah, currently serving as PML-N Punjab president, has been personally nominated by party supremo and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. Known for his strong organizational role in Punjab, he previously served as Federal Interior Minister during the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) coalition government. A longstanding political ally of Nawaz Sharif, he is considered one of the party’s most trusted figures.

If elected, he will hold the Senate seat until March 2027. Voting for the Senate elections is scheduled for September 9.

The development comes at a critical time for the PML-N as the party seeks to strengthen its influence in the Senate, where control is often crucial for the passage of key legislation and for shaping the political balance of power. The party’s leadership, led by Nawaz Sharif, is reportedly focused on placing loyalists in parliament’s upper chamber to ensure stability in the face of a turbulent political climate.

Political observers note that Sanaullah’s candidacy reflects Nawaz Sharif’s reliance on seasoned loyalists to bolster the party’s authority, particularly with challenges mounting from rival parties ahead of the new legislative session. His reputation as a hardliner and his close association with both Nawaz Sharif and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif make him a pivotal figure in the PML-N’s internal power structure.
