ISLAMABAD; The OIC Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH), in partnership with the Embassy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, hosted a high-level dialogue titled “Ethiopia–Pakistan Green Dialogue: Lessons from Ethiopia’s Green Legacy” at the COMSTECH Auditorium in Islamabad.

The event opened with a recitation from the Holy Qur’an, followed by the national anthems of both countries and a special documentary highlighting Ethiopia’s landmark “Green Legacy” initiative.

In his welcome address, Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator General of OIC-COMSTECH, emphasized the significance of green diplomacy and collective responsibility in addressing pressing global issues such as climate change, deforestation, and environmental degradation. Ambassador Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula, representing Ethiopia, showcased his country’s achievements through the Green Legacy campaign, which has become a global benchmark for climate action through mass afforestation and sustainable practices.

The dialogue was attended by H.E. Senator Yusuf Raza Gillani, Chairman of the Senate of Pakistan, as the Chief Guest. In his keynote speech, Senator Gillani stressed that climate change is a harsh reality for Pakistan, which, despite contributing less than one percent to global carbon emissions, remains among the most climate-vulnerable nations. He highlighted the recurring threats of floods, melting glaciers, and droughts.

Applauding Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative as a model for global reforestation and sustainability, Senator Gillani noted that both Pakistan and Ethiopia face common challenges and can find solutions through South–South cooperation. He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s active role in global climate diplomacy, citing the country’s leadership in championing the Loss and Damage Fund at COP27 and its continued advocacy for climate finance at COP29.

He proposed practical avenues of collaboration, including the creation of joint task forces, parliamentary exchanges, and research partnerships. Extending an invitation to Ethiopia’s parliamentary leadership, he also welcomed their participation in the upcoming Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference in Pakistan. “Together, we can build a greener, safer, and sustainable future,” he concluded.

Distinguished dignitaries and delegation heads further echoed the need for regional and global cooperation to achieve sustainable development and combat climate change.

The ceremony also featured the presentation of Green Legacy Awards, a symbolic tree plantation, and a group photograph, underscoring the shared commitment of Pakistan and Ethiopia towards environmental stewardship.

A panel discussion brought together experts and policymakers who explored innovative strategies, policy frameworks, and community-led initiatives for long-term ecological sustainability. The session concluded with an engaging Q&A session and a networking lunch, where participants voiced strong support for deeper Pakistan–Ethiopia cooperation in climate resilience, ecological restoration, and sustainable growth.

The dialogue successfully highlighted the shared vision of both nations in strengthening environmental diplomacy and working towards a greener, more sustainable future for generations ahead.
