MNN (Web Desk); Delhi Police on Monday detained senior opposition leaders, including Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut during a protest against the Indian Election Commission’s alleged collusion with the ruling BJP.

All detained MPs, including Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, were released after approximately two hours in custody.

Police reported that over 30 Members of Parliament were taken to the Parliament Street Police Station. The Election Commission had authorized only 30 MPs to enter its premises, but the protest saw a much larger turnout, which led to police intervention.

Authorities also noted that no official permission was sought for the protest march to the Election Commission headquarters.

The protest march began from Parliament House, aiming to reach the Election Commission office about one kilometer away, but police stopped the procession midway to maintain law and order.

Joint Commissioner of Police Deepak Purohit confirmed the detentions but declined to provide further details. Deputy Commissioner of Police Devesh Kumar Mahla said, “The Election Commission allowed only 30 MPs to visit and submit a complaint, but over 200 marched. We stopped them to prevent any law and order issues. Some MPs tried to jump barricades and were detained.”

Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, grandchildren of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, were among those detained but released shortly after.
