Iran and European trio meet in Istanbul amid nuclear tensions and sanctions threat

Istanbul/Turkey: Deputy foreign ministers from Iran and the European trio – the UK, Germany, and France (E3) – are meeting in Istanbul today to discuss Tehran’s nuclear program and the contentious issue of sanctions relief. This critical round of talks comes as the E3 nations have threatened to trigger the “snapback mechanism” to reimpose UN Security Council (UNSC) sanctions on Iran if no concrete progress is made by the end of August.

Iran is being represented by Majid Takht-Ravanchi, the Political Deputy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran, and Kazem Gharibabadi, the Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs. Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated that Iran would “clearly express its positions” during these discussions.

The meeting holds significant weight, as it is the first such direct engagement since the recent conflict between Israel and Iran, which involved reported US and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Iran, however, has maintained a firm stance. Deputy Foreign Minister Gharibabadi warned earlier this week that triggering sanctions would be “completely illegal” and could lead Iran to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Iranian officials have emphasized that their engagement depends on “rebuilding Iran’s trust,” especially with the United States, and respecting Iran’s rights under the NPT. While Iran has stated it has no intention of pursuing nuclear weapons, its enrichment levels, particularly the reported 60% enriched uranium stockpile, remain a key concern for Western powers.

The outcome of these Istanbul talks will be closely watched, as they could determine whether a diplomatic path forward is possible or if the international community will move towards reimposing UN sanctions, a step that could further escalate regional tensions.
