NDMA issues weather and GLOF alert amid forecast of torrential rains across Pakistan

Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide alert for the next 12 hours, warning of torrential rains, thunderstorms, and the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in northern regions. The authority has urged local administrations and residents to remain vigilant, especially in areas near rivers and glaciers.

According to the NDMA, due to a rise in temperatures and expected rainfall, there is an increased risk of GLOFs in northern Pakistan. Residents near riverbanks in Hunza, Shigar, Ghanche, and Chitral have been advised to exercise caution. Relevant provincial and district-level disaster management bodies, including PDMA Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, GB DMA, and DDMAs, have been directed to closely monitor high-risk zones.

The forecast includes heavy rainfall with strong winds in Islamabad and several districts of Punjab, including Mianwali, Khushab, Faisalabad, Okara, Sahiwal, Multan, and Bahawalnagar. Urban flooding is anticipated in these areas, posing risks to low-lying communities.

In Balochistan, areas such as Zhob, Killa Saifullah, Loralai, Barkhan, Ziarat, Dera Bugti, Sibi, Chaman, Quetta, Mastung, Kalat, Surab, Khuzdar, Awaran, and Panjgur are also likely to receive heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds. The NDMA warns of potential urban flooding, landslides, power outages, and traffic disruptions as a result of the adverse weather conditions.

The authority has strongly advised the public to stay away from weak structures, electricity poles, and billboards during the storm. Sudden surges in water flow in local streams are also a concern. Emergency response units have been instructed to ensure timely deployment of machinery and equipment in vulnerable areas.

Tourists are especially cautioned against venturing near glacial regions for sightseeing, photography, or trekking activities due to the elevated GLOF threat.

Furthermore, the NDMA has directed concerned departments to prioritize road clearance in case of blockages and to take preemptive measures to mitigate any emergency. Citizens are urged to stay updated through the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert mobile application for real-time weather warnings and safety guidance.
