ISLAMABAD: Federal cabinet has taken final decision to import 5 lac tons sugar to provide relief to people besides keeping its price stable.
According to ministry of National Food Security the step has been taken to stabilize the price of sugar and avert possible shortage of sugar.
The ministry clarified that sugar will be imported through government sector and all the arrangements have been finalized in this regard.
Import process is going to start forthwith so that the availability of sugar could be ensured in the market.
It has been said in the statement the strategy of the present government regarding import of sugar is not only different from previous governments but also is more effective and transparent.
The burden was shifted to national kitty by creating artificial shortage in the past and reliance was made on subsidy. At present sugar prices are being controlled by taking timely decisions.
The incumbent government had exported sugar when it was available in surplus quantity. Now decision is being taken to import it when hike in its price in markets is feared.
