Islamabad (Monitoring Desk) Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother tragically died in a car accident in northwestern Spain, the Portuguese Football Federation confirmed on Thursday. The regional fire department of Castile and Leon reported that the vehicle crashed shortly after midnight.

The crash occurred near Zamora, the capital of Zamora province in the Castile and León region, when their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames. Emergency services confirmed that both men were dead at the scene.

Spanish police told Reuters they could not officially confirm the identities, but all indications pointed to Jota and his brother. The bodies were transported to a forensics unit in Zamora, where autopsies will be conducted.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) expressed profound grief over the tragedy. “We have lost two champions. Their deaths represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day,” the federation said in a statement. FPF President Pedro Proenca also shared his condolences, noting that Jota was “much more than an amazing player… respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community.”

The federation has requested UEFA to hold a minute’s silence in memory of Jota and Andre before Portugal’s match against Spain in the women’s European Championship.

Emergency services in Castilla and León detailed the accident, stating that their operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle on fire on the A-52 motorway near Cernadilla, Zamora. Local police, firefighters, and medical units responded, but despite their efforts, both occupants of the car were declared dead at the scene.

Jota’s death marks a heartbreaking end to a life that was not only filled with footballing triumphs but also rich personal milestones. Just last month, he married his longtime partner Rute Cardoso in a fairytale ceremony. The couple, who met as teenagers in Porto and had been together since they were 13, recently welcomed their third child in November. Rute, who supported Jota throughout his journey from Paços Ferreira to Porto, Atletico Madrid, Wolverhampton, and finally Liverpool, shared a touching wedding video on Instagram only hours before the tragic accident. In the clip, the couple is seen gazing lovingly into each other’s eyes and celebrating with family and friends against the backdrop of a stunning castle venue. Rute captioned it: “A day we will never forget.”

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, quickly becoming a fan favourite at Anfield. He scored 65 goals in 182 appearances across all competitions, helping the club lift the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup titles. On the international stage, he earned 49 caps for Portugal and was part of the squad that twice won the UEFA Nations League.

Liverpool Football Club paid tribute to their forward on social media, writing, “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.” Meanwhile, fans flocked to Rute’s posts to offer condolences. “Always a champion,” wrote one commenter, while another said, “My condolences, how painful this has been.” Many filled the comment section with crying GIFs of footballers and beloved characters, reflecting the collective heartbreak felt by supporters around the world.

Jota and Rute’s love story, which began in their early teens in Porto, was one marked by devotion and resilience. Together they navigated the challenges of a rising football career across multiple countries, all while building a family that included three young children and their three dogs. Just days ago, Rute shared a joyful photo from their wedding preparations, captioning it: “My dream came true,” to which Jota lovingly replied, “But I’m the lucky one.”

In the wake of this tragedy, the football world mourns not only the loss of a gifted player but also a devoted husband, father, and brother. As tributes continue to pour in, Diogo Jota and Andre will be remembered for the joy they brought both on and off the pitch, leaving behind a legacy that Portuguese football has vowed to honour every single day.
