LAHORE; An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore on Thursday granted bail to Shershah, the nephew of PTI founder Imran Khan and son of Aleema Khan, in the Jinnah House attack case.
Shershah had been arrested on August 22, a day after the detention of his brother Shahrez. Initially, he was remanded in police custody for five days before being sent on a 14-day judicial remand.
The charges stem from the May 9, 2023 riots, which erupted nationwide following the arrest of Imran Khan in a corruption case. The unrest saw attacks on military and state installations, with the Jinnah House attack becoming one of the most prominent incidents.
During Thursday’s hearing, the defence lawyer argued that no challan had been submitted and insisted the accused could not be kept in custody indefinitely. The counsel further maintained that Shershah was not involved in the violence and that no evidence had been presented against him.
After reviewing the arguments, the court accepted the bail petition. A day earlier, his brother Shahrez had also been granted bail in a separate case linked to the May 9 riots.
Both brothers face allegations of orchestrating anti-state campaigns and participating in the violent protests.
According to earlier reports, investigators alleged that Shershah was present alongside Hassan Niazi during the Jinnah House attack and had been booked for arson, vandalism, and setting a police van ablaze, in addition to allegedly spearheading an anti-state digital campaign for several months.
Sources further claimed that following the May 9 violence, Shershah went into hiding before fleeing to London, where he stayed for nearly two years.
