ISLAMABAD; The Government of Japan has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of human lives caused by devastating floods in northern Pakistan, reaffirming its solidarity with the country in a time of crisis.

In an official message, Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru conveyed heartfelt condolences to Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and the people of Pakistan following the tragic floods that have left dozens dead, injured many, and displaced hundreds of families.

“I am deeply saddened to learn that many precious lives were lost in the flood that occurred in the northern part of Pakistan,” Prime Minister Ishiba said in his message. “On behalf of the Government of Japan, I pray for the souls of the victims and extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I would also like to express my sincere wishes for the swift recovery of the injured.”

The northern regions of Pakistan, particularly Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, have faced heavy monsoon rains in recent days, triggering flash floods, landslides, and road blockages. Rescue teams continue operations in difficult terrain, while thousands remain in urgent need of shelter and relief assistance.

Japan’s gesture of sympathy reflects the enduring partnership between Islamabad and Tokyo. Over the years, Japan has been among the key contributors to Pakistan’s disaster relief and rehabilitation efforts. Following the catastrophic 2010 floods, Japan provided emergency assistance including tents, water purification units, and financial aid. Similarly, in subsequent natural disasters, Tokyo extended both humanitarian and technical support.

Bilateral relations between the two countries extend beyond disaster relief. Japan has consistently supported Pakistan in sectors such as health, education, infrastructure development, and energy. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has played a vital role in skill development and technical cooperation projects across Pakistan.

Diplomatic observers note that Japan’s latest message of solidarity not only conveys compassion but also underscores the resilience of the Pakistan–Japan friendship, rooted in mutual respect and cooperation.

As Pakistan struggles with the latest flood crisis, Tokyo’s reassurance of support highlights the continuing importance of international partnerships in facing natural calamities exacerbated by climate change.
